How to Fix Broken Sunglasses

Small Do-it-yourself eyeglass repairs

A pair of sunglasses can be your savior on a warm, sunny day, protecting your eyes from harmful UV rays. At Eyeglass Repair USA, we understand how frustrating it is when your favorite pair breaks. While a serious break or damage often requires a professional repair, knowing how to fix sunglasses on your own can help with smaller problems.

1. Repair the Bridge

If your sunglasses break at the bridge and you don’t have the time to wait for them to be repaired professionally, you can utilize a temporary solution. Using a small piece of paper to connect the two sides and serve as a splint, try gluing the break together using heavy-duty adhesive. This fix may not last very long, and you may soon end up breaking your sunglasses again. If your frames are plastic, you may be able to reattach the frames by holding each side over a pot of boiling water, then pressing a pin into each edge while the plastic is soft.

2. Tighten the Screws

In some cases, simply tightening the tiny screws that hold your sunglasses together can be all you need to do to fix glasses frames. Over time, the small screws loosen and can fall out. A small screwdriver to tighten or replace these screws can be purchased from a local eyeglass store or pharmacy. Clear nail polish can also be applied over the screws to prevent them from coming loose.

3. Remove Lens Scratches

Deep scratches that prevent you from being able to see out of your glasses may require a skilled hand, but smaller scratches can be fixed at home using common ingredients, including the following:

  • Silver polish
  • Toothpaste
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Baking soda
  • Furniture polish
  • Car wax

Each of these products can fill in small nicks or dings, leaving you with lenses that provide clearer visibility.

Armed with these simple repair techniques, you can wear your sunglasses for almost any activity without having to worry about damaging them.
