We developed a retrofit method that gives reliable strength, and the repair will be nearly invisible. When the eyelet section of a Cartier eyeglass elbow post breaks in half, we offer a specific retrofit that provides greater durability:
We shape a sterling silver bar to match the original elbow post section.
Then we prepare the old elbow post to accept the new eyelet backplate.
- The backside (yellow in sketch) of the elbow is filed down, and a solid silver backplate (green, hand-fabricated) is installed to support the rimless mounting system.
- We weld the new backplate securely to the original Cartier elbow, but only from the back and side—so the repair is not visible from the front.
- The elbow post is then gold-plated with high karat yellow or white gold, depending on the frame.
Finally, the Cartier eyeglass elbow post section is mounted back to the lens.
The Cartier eyeglass elbow/post retrofit has now been properly completed.
